The wild kingdom took center stage Saturday night in Beverly Hills. That evening’s Genesis Awards, the annual tribute to the media for raising public awareness of animal issues, honored creativity in feature film, documentaries, television, broadcast news and print journalism.

The usual wide range of Hollywood celebrities turned out for the 26th edition of the Genesis Awards, conducted annually by the Hollywood Office of the Humane Society of the United States. Among the winners were “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” in the feature film category, a¬nd the Wyler Award went to Ian Somerhalder, star of the television series “The Vampire Diaries” for his efforts using both traditional and social media to spread the word about critical animal issues. Recognized with the International Humanitarian Award was Indian media icon Pritish Nandy for his work advancing animal welfare in India and for championing the country’s beleaguered street dogs. Jill Milan once again was in attendance and we were fortunate to have a table full of dignitaries. Visiting from New York were best-selling author, public speaker and vegan advocate Victoria Moran, as well as W magazine Assistant Managing Editor Roseann Marulli Rodriguez. Austrian countess Michelle Czernin Von Chudenitz-Morzin, CEO of Popular Press Media Group and director of the SoHo Film Festival, also joined us, accompanied by Daytime Emmy Award nominee James Scott of “Days of our Lives.” Maya Stewart, whose designs include the Jill Milan Art Deco Clutch featured in this month’s W magazine, joined us once again with her husband, music producer Steve Daly.

In true Hollywood fashion the stars arrived on the red carpet, and Jill Milan was carried by Fiona Gubelmann, one of the evening’s celebrity presenters and star of television’s “Wilfred.” Fiona carried the Kensington Clutch, which will be available later this year when we announce the Fall/Winter collection.

“We paid tribute to an amazing array of works that address animal protection concerns,” said Beverly Kaskey, executive producer of the annual Genesis Awards and senior director of the HSUS Hollywood Outreach Program, “but the real winners of The HSUS’s 26th Genesis Awards are the animals themselves, who rely on these invaluable voices to speak for them.”

The event will be shown as a one-hour special on Animal Planet on May 5.
